Just ran across this gem in a comment that Dave made on this post.
Chuck, what Safari does with RSS is an outrage. They all fuck it up, in a vain effort to make it easy for users. Please ignore what they do. Awful.
Now, I’m certainly not qualified to speak to the correctness of Safari’s RSS handling. But gods forbid that we make something easier for the users. That might put Ol’ Man Winer out of a job.
